Canada to Invest $730,000 for 438 EV Chargers in Residential Buildings

Natural Resources Canada announced on Thursday it will invest $730,000 CAD ($571,770 USD) for 438 Level-2 electric vehicle chargers to be installed across various multi-unit residential buildings across the country.

EV chargers will be installed in residential buildings in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta, by Killam Properties SGP Ltd., with the latter contributing to the project, taking total funding to $1.4 million CAD. The chargers will be “available by next fall”.

The Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program from Natural Resource Canada will fund the EV chargers, available to current and future rental housing tenants at Killam properties.

“We’re making electric vehicles more affordable and accessible for Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Investing in more charging stations — like the ones announced today — will allow more Canadians to be in the driver’s seat on the road to a net-zero future and help achieve our climate goals,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources.

Canada says it has invested $1 billion CAD “to make EVs more affordable and accessible for Canadians,” since 2015, which includes its federal EV rebate of $5,000 CAD for qualifying vehicles (the entry Model 3 no longer qualifies due to a recent price hike).

The nation plans to have all passenger cars sold in Canada be zero-emission by 2035.
