Lucid Air Wins Motortrend 2022 Car of the Year
The Lucid Air Dream Edition has been receiving glowing reviews, and with the electric vehicle’s (EV’s) first units officially delivering to customers last month at a Lucid Air launch event, one publication has named the sedan the Car of the Year.
Motortrend chose the Lucid Air as the 2022 Car of the Year, as shared in a report on Monday. The Lucid Air competed alongside several contenders, notably including the 2021 Porsche Taycan and the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS, among several others still.
The Lucid Air was awarded Car of the Year based on six criteria: engineering excellence, efficiency, advancement in design, performance of the intended function, safety and value.
Regarding the EV’s engineering, the publication touted the Air’s well-designed and engineered electric powertrain, as well as the bi-directional “wunderbox” electronic controller managing the 900-volt electric system.
The report also discusses the Lucid Air’s efficiency, which has its Dream and Grand Touring variants able to drive 451 and 520 miles per charge, respectively.
Meant to feel like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class on the inside and an E-Class on the outside, features editor Christian Seabaugh said of the vehicle’s design advancements, “[the Lucid Air includes] gorgeous-looking, purposeful, clean, classic lines that remind me of classic French cars from the ’60s.”
While data is lacking as for safety in real-world situations due to the car’s infancy, Motortrend also noted the vehicle’s 32 sensors which include 14 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and five radar sensors, as well as a high-resolution lidar sensor.
Lucid Motors has the backing of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, as one of its major shareholders.
