Full Segment: Jay Leno Breaks 1/4 Mile World Record in Tesla Model S Plaid [VIDEO]
Back in June, comedian and auto buff, Jay Leno, broke the 1/4 mile world record in a Tesla Model S Plaid, for a production car. The feat was achieved at Famoso Raceway, just north of Bakersfield, California.
Fast forward five months later, and we finally have the full clip of Leno’s run in the Model S Plaid, shared on his show Jay Leno’s Garage.
With the National Hot Rod Association, Leno had to beat a time of 9.4 seconds in the 1/4 mile held by a Bugatti Chiron Sport. With Leno in the hot seat of Model S Plaid, he clocked in a record 9.247 seconds at 152.09 mph.
Of course, Leno’s world record was short-lived, as Tesla’s professional test driver tried his own attempt at the 1/4 mile world record…and smashed Leno’s time with a 9.234 seconds at 152.16 mph. Leno blamed his loss on a meatball sandwich he had for lunch (Lol).
Check out the full segment of Leno racing a Model S Plaid below, where we also get to see Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s lead designer chat with the comedian again:
Since then, we’ve seen other Model S Plaid owners take 1/4 miles times even lower, down to 9.08 seconds:
Earlier today, we also shared how a modified Tesla Model S Plaid was able to reach an 8.99 second 1/4 mile, with a trap speed of 155 mph. This is the first time a Model S Plaid has hit an 8-second quarter-mile, despite the seats removed.
