Tesla CEO Elon Musk was answering questions during the company’s 2021 shareholder meeting, currently being held at its new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.
When asked if there was going to be a rumoured Model 2, Musk replied, “Model 2 is not a car—there is no Model 2”, somewhat side-stepping the original question.
He then repeated the company’s naming scheme for the Model 3, which was planned to be named “Model E”, until Ford threatened to sue them, so they switched to “3” (a backwards-looking E).
When asked if Tesla will make a minibus camper van, Musk answered he was a “big fan” of the VW bus. He said over time Tesla will make “all major variants of vehicles, why not?”, adding it could be “one in every single category I think”.
Tesla stated at its Battery Day presentation it was planning a more affordable $25,000 car, and it remains unclear when that would happen. Musk has said in the past a cheaper Tesla could be designed locally in Germany or China, to fit local standards.
