Police Dog Tracks Down Tesla Thieves in Lake County, Illinois

Dax lake county sheriff

An apparently stolen Tesla was speeding in the area of Route 60 and Route 21 in Vernon Hills in Lake County, Illinois, and the alleged thieves were tracked down by the Lake County Sheriff Canine, Dax.

According to Lake & McHenry County Scanner, a Lake County sheriff’s sergeant was passed by a red Tesla at around 12:30am on Saturday, at an “extremely high rate of speed.”. The sergeant was able to get the plates of the vehicle, registered out of Vernon Hills.

Vernon Hills Police Dispatch told Lake County Sheriff’s Telecommunicators the Tesla has just been stolen, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Christopher Covelli.

The stolen Tesla was later found disabled around Route 41 and Route 176 in Lake Bluff. Two males were seen running westbound from the electric vehicle into the wooded area by Lake Bluff police.

A perimeter was set up and sheriff’s deputies responded, along with Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax, who was able to immediately track down a 17-year-old male that ran away from the dog, but right into the hands of a waiting police officer.

Dax then located a second 17-year-old male hiding in the wooded area, and the latter was also taken into police custody.

Both males are Grayslake residents and were turned over to Vernon Hills Police to investigate.

The thieves likely did not know Tesla owners can track the exact location of their vehicles in near real-time, right within the Tesla mobile app. For those with third-party services such as TeslaFi activated, you can not only find the location of your vehicle, but also the routes driven, energy used and range of speed travelled.

I think we have a future Tesla ‘frunkpuppy’ Hall of Fame candidate right here, in Dax the police dog.
