Lucid Motors Shows Off Lucid Air Cold Weather Testing at -40 C [VIDEO]

Lucid cold weather testing

Lucid Motors on Wednesday shared a new video of its Lucid Air electric sedan cold weather testing, at -40 degrees Celsius (-40 F).

The company said they tested the Lucid Air at a cold location, plus also cold-soaked the vehicle overnight using climate chambers to -40 C.

“And that has all different kinds of impacts on the vehicle,” says Nicolas Minbiole, VP of Quality. “Lubricants change viscosity. They change their properties at different temperatures. The batteries react differently at different temperatures. Their ability to provide power, their ability to accept power when you’re charging it. You need to test all of these things to understand what the limitations of the different aspects of the vehicle are and then optimize them.”

The company said its Lucid Air needs to “respond the same way”, regardless of “whether it’s a sunny spring day in California or the dead of winter in Minnesota.”

The company said the Lucid Air “hit all its cold weather testing targets from quickly warming up, to starting, charging, and more. And despite cold temperatures, the quietness of the cabin was notable.”

“We’re using the results of this cold weather testing to ensure the Lucid Air is 100% ready for our customers, no matter where they live or what conditions they’ll drive in. That means optimizing every single detail of the vehicle for extreme environments,” concluded the company.

Lucid Motors was expected to start delivering its Lucid Air sedan in the spring of this year, but it has since been delayed to the latter half of 2021.
