Just when you thought cryptocurrencies were popular right now, how about blockchain-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs)?

NFTs, if we can wrap our heads around them, and simply put, allow owners to have unique ownership over something digital, whether it be a drawing, song, video clip, art and more.

On Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted, “I’m selling this song about NFTs as an NFT.”

Musk’s tweet was put up for auction on platform Valuables, a social media network built on blockchain, allowing people to bid for the NFT. As of Tuesday, Musk’s tweet has garnered a high bid of $1.12 million USD, reports CNBC.

The highest bid is from Sina Estavi, CEO of Bridge Oracle, ready to spend at least $1.12 million USD for Musk’s tweet as an NFT. Should Estavi become the winning bidder, he would exclusively own Musk’s NFT tweet, “signed and verified” by the Tesla and SpaceX CEO himself.

Yes, society has gone bonkers, folks (don’t get us started on NFT art that’s worth $69 million).

Update March 16: Musk says he has changed his mind and will not sell his NFT, saying, “actually, doesn’t feel quite right selling this. Will pass.”
