It’s never a good idea to fall asleep behind the wheel, and for one Hillsborough resident in New Jersey, it just so happened she was driving her Tesla.

According to South Brunswick police on Tuesday morning, they said “Please always remember to stay awake when driving a @Tesla. This driver fell asleep and struck a utility pole on Dey Road. No injuries but the car was destroyed. #StayAlert”

The 34-year old female driver was heading westbound along Dey Road, when the 2021 Tesla (it appears to be a Model Y) veered into the eastbound lane when heading towards a curve, note police, as per NJ.com.

The Tesla struck a utility pole in the eastbound lane of the country road, resulting in the electric vehicle’s front right tire ripping off and the damaged vehicle coming to a stop in a corn field. The woman was not hurt in the collision.

According to the police offer that responded to the scene, it was unclear if Tesla’s Autopilot was engaged.

“Driver fatigue is a significant issues, no matter what type of vehicle you have,” Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a statement. “Statistics show that you are three times more likely to be in a crash if you are fatigued. Don’t let the type of vehicle you are driving lull you into a belief it is OK to drive while exhausted.”
