Tesla Details Leasing Changes to Model 3 Owners, Mentions Purchase Option

Tesla has started informing customers of a new leasing experience, set to arrive in “early 2021”. According to an email sent to U.S. customers, Tesla details its “new leasing experience.”

“In the next few months, Tesla is moving the lease experience to your Tesla Account,” explains the email. Tesla says there are two major changes coming when it comes to payment and management options, as shared by @BLKMDL3 (he owns a Model 3 and Y):

There will now be a new place to pay, as Tesla leasing customers will be able to “conveniently make payments and enrolled in Autopay within your Tesla Account.”

Also, new lease management options will be found within your Tesla Account, for actions such as:

  • Extending your lease
  • Transferring your lease
  • Purchasing your car
  • Selling to Non-Tesla Dealers
  • Reporting a Total Loss
  • Requesting an Early Lease Termination

It’s worth noting Tesla is saying in the email there is an option for buying out your Model 3 or Model Y after your lease if you are eligible, an option that was not previously available for these models.

The rationale before was Tesla would not offer a purchase option for Model 3, as these cars would be used for the company’s long-delayed ‘robotaxi’ network. As it stands, Full Self-Driving beta is not ready yet to operate on its own yet, despite impressive advances.

Tesla’s website still says Model 3 and Y “are not eligible at this time, unless a third-party dealership is purchasing directly.”

Others noted this lease email seems similar to what has been already available to Model S and Model X owners. Maybe the same email template was sent out to Model 3 and Model Y owners by mistake, especially the ‘purchasing your car’ section? Time will tell.

According to Alexandra (@MmmAlexandraS), she owns a Model 3 and Model Y, and similarly received this email.

As for the leasing changes, Tesla says “we’re launching this experience early 2021,” and will send more information when they get closer to the launch date.

Would you be interested in buying out your Model 3 lease, if this was indeed possible?
