Over 2,500 Tesla Model Y SUVs Recalled in the U.S., But Software Update Fixes Bug [u]
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla says it is recalling over 2,500 of its 2020 Model Y SUVs (via CNET).
The NHTSA letter to Tesla dated October 16, 2020, details acknowledgment of the recall issue, described as “trailer brake lights that fail to illuminate during braking increase the risk of a crash.”
According to the NHTSA, the problem description is as follows:
Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2020 Model Y vehicles equipped with a global rear lamp and tow package configuration. A software error prevents the illumination of trailer brake lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Tesla will contact Model Y owners affected by this issue, which stands at 2,567 units. The company says it has released an over-the-air firmware update back on September 23, 2020.
Tesla explains “the fix will be carried forward in firmware releases 2020.40.3 and later. As of this filing, more than 97% of the affected VIN population has installed firmware release 2020.36.12 or a later release containing the correction.”
Alternatively, owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-605-882-4000 and mention recall number SB-20-00-002.
Tesla recently released a software update for Model Y, increasing the vehicle’s range by 10 miles.
