As the Tesla Model Y has been out on the market for a few months now, drivers are digging a bit deeper into some of its features. While there are no shortage of software details to explore, many drivers are curious about some of the vehicle’s hardware details.
A video posted around the release of the vehicle revealed that the Model Y had no towing hitch. However, just a month or so after the video, Tesla released a tow hitch option for the Model Y on their website. In a new Twitter thread, one Model Y owner decides to investigate the vehicle’s towing capabilities a bit further.
Additional #ModelY towing info thread. Like the web manual, the in-car manual says it is not equipped with towing. The car is not misconfigured. I'm sure the manual will be updated eventually. pic.twitter.com/tsDXW7yqea

The Twitter user @Microfrost_ begins by examining the Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual. Despite the towing hitch option being listed on Tesla’s website, it appears the manual has not been updated to reflect this change. The thread then takes the time to show off some pictures of the hitch receiver for anyone curious about its shape and dimensions.
As the image shows, the bottom of the receiver rests about 12.5 inches or 31.75 cm off of the ground. The hitch receiver opening is 2 inches or 5.08 cm. A further look into the hitch showcases a panel that’s used to cover the unit. There is also a place to install chains for towing.
The Tesla Model Y factory tow hitch add-on costs $1,000 USD or $1,300 CAD in Canada. Third-party tow hitch installations will be available for cheaper but won’t have software integrations like the factory install.
