Tesla has finally added its Model Y to its Referral Program, allowing existing owners and their friends and family earn 1,000 free Supercharger miles or 1,500 kilometres (Canada, eh!).
The Model Y was not eligible for the Referral Program as it only applied for Model S, Model 3 and Model X. Now, with Model Y into the mix, both current and new customers can earn free Supercharging, as an incentive for buying one of the company’s electric vehicles.
Model Y deliveries launched in the United States back in March, and the first Model Y deliveries in Canada are set to begin this month. Canadian Model Y owners have already been assigned VINs and been emailed to finish filling out registration and payment details.
Tesla’s Referral Program states, “Orders for a Tesla car will need to be placed by accessing the Design Studio through your unique referral link for you both to earn referral awards. Note that referrals can’t be added after an order is placed or at time of delivery and is not a code that is entered at time of purchase.”
However, it is still possible to have the referral program applied to your existing Model Y order, as other Tesla owners have done so in the past, as stated in various online forums and Facebook groups (Google is your friend).
You need to reach out to your local Tesla advisor by phone or email and ask them politely to apply either your own referral code or someone else’s, as their systems can allow that to happen. It’s one of those “your mileage may vary” moments but be friendly and a Tesla advisor can make it happen.
Should you cancel your existing Model Y order to jump on someone’s referral code for free Supercharging credits, if the above doesn’t work? The answer is no, as you’ll be bumped from the queue and also pay current pricing, which has increased since the first pre-orders.
According to Tesla’s program, “Each car referral also gives you a chance to win a Model Y monthly or Roadster supercar quarterly. Owners who already have free Supercharging get two chances to win.”
