Tesla Stop Sign Detection Release Likely in Upcoming Weeks
Tesla’s autopilot features are quite astounding for a number of reasons. As one of the leading producers in electric vehicles equipped with autonomous features, Tesla’s Autopilot provides some excellent examples of self-driving features. However, there’s always been some curiosity surrounding stop sign detection. According to a recent tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, it looks like widespread stop sign detection could be coming soon.
On Friday, April 3rd, 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted saying, “Hoping to roll out traffic lights & stops to wide US release in a few weeks & probably WW release in Q3 (so many variations in each country!). Very important to make sure this is done right.” Of course, as Musk stated, the company doesn’t want to rush implementation. Because stop sign detection is such a crucial function of the autopilot system, it brings its own set of complex challenges. Furthermore, improper execution of the feature could create even more problems for drivers.

An earlier rewrite of some of the software’s foundational code led many to believe that enhanced stop sign detection was closer than expected. According to Musk, the different variations required for separate countries makes for even more work. Nevertheless, there’s already been footage of Tesla Autopilot stopping at a stoplight. This evidence, in combination with Musk’s tweet, make stop sign detection closer to the public.
