There’s some great news for anyone curious about improved Tesla autopilot functionality. Thanks to a core foundation code rewrite, drivers can expect to see upgrades in autopilot function soon.

March 1st brought this Tweet by Elon Musk, “We need to finish work on Autopilot core foundation code & 3D labelling, then functionality will happen quickly. Not long now.” The update is reassuring for those who were beginning to wonder what would result of Tesla’s functionality in regards to key self-driving features.

The core rewrite looks to enhance several aspects of Tesla Autopilot functionality. For one, the improved core foundation code aids Autopilot visualization. There have long been doubts surrounding Tesla Autopilot’s ability to accurately detect objects out on the roads. These kinds of updates help to mitigate these assumptions in the public.

A recent series of software updates improved Model X and Model Y range efficiency. Drivers hope to see similar results from this rewrite. The core code rewrite also brings upgrades to the 3D labelling system. This upgrade will have a profound effect on Autopilot’s overall safety and efficiency.

When can we expect to see improved Autopilot functionality implemented? According to Musk’s tweet, it won’t be “long now.” The core code rewrite comes at an opportune time for Tesla, as Model Y SUVs are prepped for delivery.
