Elon Musk Says Orbital Compute Will Outpace Earth Data Centers by 2028

By late 2028, SpaceX’s monthly rollout of orbital AI compute will probably outpace what is deployed on the ground each month, Elon Musk said Friday.

Replying at 7:41 PM PT to a post charting a SpaceX revenue model from investor Shaun Maguire, Musk wrote that “Terrestrial compute will be peanuts compared to orbital compute.” He added that orbital compute deployed per month “probably exceeds terrestrial around the end of 2028 and then far exceeds it in 2029.”

The charts Musk answered assume terrestrial compute capacity inside SpaceX’s Space Infrastructure business grows from about 1 gigawatt early in 2026 to 21 gigawatts by the end of 2028. Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital, published that bottoms-up model earlier Friday and called it a 50th-percentile forecast with wide error bars.

SpaceX has already sketched the hardware path. Its planned Star Mind AI satellites are meant to fly in large formations for in-orbit compute, with designs packing more than 250 kilowatts of solar power per satellite.

Google is moving in the same direction. The search giant plans to loft its first Project Suncatcher AI satellite on a SpaceX Transporter-18 rideshare, after earlier talks about putting data centers into orbit with SpaceX.

Musk’s Friday reply is a forecast, not a deployment schedule. He used “probably” for the late-2028 crossover and did not attach a gigawatt target or a satellite count to that date.

Will orbital compute really pass Earth-based capacity before 2030?
