50-Foot Bronze Prometheus Statue Rises Outside SpaceX Starbase

A 50-foot bronze statue of Prometheus is going up just outside Starbase.

The statue is being assembled on private land near the entrance to the SpaceX launch site, according to drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer, who documented the work on Sunday. Tegtmeyer said it is not a SpaceX commission, and Elon Musk is not paying for it.

French foundry Atelier Missor cast the statue in sections near Paris, shipped the pieces across the Atlantic, and is assembling them at the site. The foundry is spending about a million dollars of its own money on the project, Tegtmeyer said.

In the myth, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity. Here the titan holds his torch toward the same sky Starship is built to punch through.

The legs are engineered to stand up to a Gulf hurricane, with stainless steel tubes 14 inches across and half-inch walls, Tegtmeyer said.

Starbase keeps growing into more than a launch site. SpaceX just rolled the Crew-13 Dragon to the pad, NASA named four astronauts for Crew-14 for a 2027 flight, and the company keeps refining the Super Heavy booster. A privately funded monument at the gate fits a place that keeps drawing attention beyond its rockets.

The foundry is betting a million dollars of its own money that a monument at the entrance to Starbase matters. The site has become a landmark beyond its rockets, and the statue plays to that. What to watch is whether the piece is finished and lit by the next Starship flight, and whether other artists follow.

Musk did not order the statue and is not paying for it, but it fits his launch site anyway. A bronze titan carrying fire toward the sky is about as close to a mission statement as a sculpture gets.
