Tesla’s Next-Gen Roadster Is Finally Getting Its Big Reveal on October 1 [UPDATE]

Tesla has officially set October 1 for what is heavily implied to be the reveal of its next-generation Roadster.

On Saturday, the automaker shared a cryptic teaser on X featuring the caption “Go for launch”. The image displays the sleek rear profile of a dark sports car under intense vertical light beams, paired a glowing red full-width light bar, and the date 10.01. Moments later, Tesla directed users to its official Roadster landing page, which now prominently displays the same date.

Tesla has not yet disclosed the event’s location or whether it will be broadcast live. Looking at the image, it almost looks like it’s flipped upside down to trick us. Cold thrusters would make sense on the bottom, no? Elon Musk previously said the Roadster could “fly”.

What the Teaser Points to

This isn’t another update on Cybercab or Optimus. Tesla is finally returning to the flagship sports car it first showcased in 2017. The second-generation electric Roadster was originally revealed as an ultra-high-performance two-seater.

When the initial prototype was unveiled nearly nine years ago, Tesla promised groundbreaking specs: a 0–60 mph sprint under two seconds, a 620-mile range, and a production start targeted for 2020. Buyers put down substantial deposits—up to $250,000 for Founders Series models—to secure early allocations.

However, production encountered continuous delays, slipping to 2022, 2023, 2024, and eventually into 2025–2026. Last year, CEO Elon Musk acknowledged that customer production would likely not begin until 2027 or 2028, and several targeted demo windows earlier this year passed without an event.

SpaceX Tie-Ins and Thruster Teases 

The “Go for launch” phrasing and vertical lighting effects align directly with long-standing claims that Tesla plans to equip the high-end Roadster with SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters. Industry reports this summer suggested Tesla has been developing a remote-controlled hover demonstration for the car, though the company has not officially detailed what will take place during the reveal.

The Broader Context

The October 1 announcement lands during a dense operational push for Tesla. The automaker recently launched limited public Cybercab testing in Austin, is preparing to open a dedicated Semi manufacturing facility later this month, and has initiated early Optimus assembly at its Fremont plant.

While utility vehicles and robotics drive Tesla’s core business model, the Roadster remains its ultimate halo project—a long-overdue promise now receiving another public spotlight.

Given Tesla’s track record with this model, the October 1 date should be viewed strictly as a product demonstration rather than the start of customer deliveries. Final pricing, production timing, and street-legal specifications remain unconfirmed.

Update September 12, 2026: Tesla has now started sending out invites to media and influencers, including Sawyer Merritt, who shared a pic of the invite.

The event invite confirms Tesla will hold the Roadster event on October 1, 2026, in Waco, Texas. The invite reads: “ROADSTER. October 1, 2026. Waco, Texas. Join us. Food and refreshments will be available.”

Tesla is asking invitees to submit their RSVP before midnight Pacific Time on Wednesday, September 16. The company says confirmed attendees will receive an email with next steps, tickets are non-transferable, IDs will be checked at the event, and no one under 21 will be admitted. Guests must also arrive and check in together.
