SpaceX is building a giant new home for its Starship rocket, and it is going up in the Louisiana marsh. The company laid out plans for Starbase Louisiana, a roughly $100 billion launch site on Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, on its official project page.
The scale is the headline, with CEO Elon Musk saying on X, “Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day and making it the biggest launch site on Earth! SpaceX makes sci-fi real.”
Plans call for construction to start in 2027, with the first launch targeted for 2029. At full buildout, the site would hold five launch complexes with two pads each, plus a propellant farm, a propellant production facility, power generation, vehicle processing, and housing for workers on site. That would make it SpaceX’s fourth and largest launch site, built for the kind of high-cadence flying Starship needs to haul Starlink satellites, orbital data centers, and eventually cargo and people toward the Moon and Mars.
It is also a big jobs pitch for the state, as SpaceX said the project would create at least 3,000 jobs to start, with room to grow toward roughly 10,000 as the site fills out. Louisiana officials have framed the investment as a way to keep young workers from leaving for opportunities in other states.
