2027 Tesla Model Y L Surpasses Range Expectations in Testing

Silver sedan driving on a tree-lined highway with autumn foliage and motion blur in the foreground menacing speed? No matter.

The new Tesla Model Y L delivered surprising results during real-world evaluation, outperforming initial estimates despite its larger size and heavier frame.
In tests conducted by Edmunds, the three-row electric SUV traveled 358 miles on a single charge. That is nearly 12 percent higher than Tesla’s internal estimate of 320 miles, making it the longest-range Model Y tested by the publication to date.
The strong performance comes despite added weight and power. On the scales, the Model Y L weighed 300 pounds more than the Model Y Long Range Launch Series and borrowed its rear motor from the higher-output Model Y Performance.
Several engineering updates helped offset those factors. A redesigned exterior, rear spoiler, and updated wheel designs dropped the drag coefficient to 0.216. The glass roof was engineered to block 30 percent more solar heat to reduce cabin cooling demands, while a longer wheelbase allowed room for a slightly larger battery pack estimated at 83 kWh.
During the evaluation, the all-wheel-drive Model Y L posted an energy consumption rate of 25.1 kWh per 100 miles. By comparison, the standard Model Y Long Range AWD covered 327 miles in Edmunds testing, while the Model Y Performance reached 293 miles.
While competitors such as the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Rivian R1S, and Lucid Gravity offer longer absolute driving distances, they rely on much larger battery packs. Edmunds noted that the Model Y L achieves its numbers through higher overall efficiency rather than sheer battery size.
