SpaceX has successfully launched its highly anticipated Starfall Demo mission, marking the debut of a brand new uncrewed cargo reentry capsule designed to change how materials are manufactured in space and returned to Earth.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 6:53 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The flight utilized a highly experienced first-stage booster making its 29th flight. This specific booster previously supported major missions including NASA’s Crew-6, USSF-124, and 23 separate Starlink flights. Following stage separation, the booster successfully completed its return to Earth, landing upright on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas positioned downrange in the Atlantic Ocean.
Unlike the traditional cone-shaped Dragon capsules SpaceX uses for human spaceflight and regular space station resupply runs, Starfall features an unusual flat, disk-shaped design. According to regulatory filings with the Federal Aviation Administration, the capsule is roughly 10 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall. It is engineered specifically as a low-cost, mass-produced cargo vehicle capable of returning up to 2,200 pounds of payload back to Earth.
The primary target market for the new spacecraft is orbital manufacturing, allowing companies to produce advanced pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and specialized optical materials in microgravity before safely returning them home. The mission profile remains mostly confidential, but the capsule will spend time in low-Earth orbit before executing a planned parachute splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the United States West Coast.
