Tesla FSD Will Soon Remember Your Parking Preferences, Says Musk
Tesla is preparing a major update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software that will allow vehicles to memorize a driver’s exact parking preferences at frequent destinations.
The upcoming feature was confirmed by CEO Elon Musk in response to a post by tech entrepreneur and Y Combinator partner Tom Blomfield. Blomfield expressed amazement at the system’s capabilities, sharing data that showed he completed 96% of his recent mileage fully autonomously. He noted that the only time he feels compelled to take the wheel is when backing down an awkward ramp into his personal garage.
Musk replied directly to the feedback, writing that “upcoming releases of FSD will remember your parking preferences, so that the car goes to the right location at your home, office, school drop off, etc.”
The Tesla chief also shed light on internal driver intervention data, revealing that navigating parking lots is currently the primary friction point for users. “Destination parking is by far the biggest reason people now intervene with FSD,” Musk stated, adding that genuine “critical safety interventions are extremely rare.”
Currently, when a Tesla operating on FSD enters a parking lot, the vehicle’s neural networks typically target the first available space they identify. This often leads to awkward positioning, forcing drivers to disengage if the car selects a spot too far from an entrance, too close to other vehicles, or in an inconvenient zone.
By adding a persistent memory layer, the vehicle will learn from a driver’s past behavior and takeovers. Instead of hunting for random open spaces, the car will automatically replicate the specific parking spots and drop-off points the owner uses every day.
