The Tesla Model Y Just Outsold Every Car in South Korea. That’s Never Happened Before.
Tesla has achieved a historic milestone in South Korea, with its Model Y becoming the best-selling vehicle overall in the country for the month of May.
According to recent sales data, Tesla sold 8,762 Model Y units during the month. This impressive surge allowed the electric SUV to beat out popular domestic combustion-engine favourites, including the Kia Sorento at 7,836 units and the Hyundai Grandeur at 5,183 units.
This marks the first time an imported vehicle has ever taken the number one spot in the total South Korean automotive market, a region traditionally dominated by domestic giants Hyundai and Kia.
Tesla’s overall momentum in the country remains strong, with the brand delivering 10,866 total imported vehicles in May. This performance allowed Tesla to outpace the combined sales of luxury rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz for the fourth consecutive month.
The achievement caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who reacted to the historic sales milestone on X by writing, “Korea is Awesome.”
Industry watchers point to several key drivers behind the sudden sales spike, including high local fuel costs, attractive electric vehicle incentives, and strong consumer demand for the Model Y’s tech-heavy features and spacious interior design.
