Tesla to Delay Optimus 3 Reveal to Stop Competitors From Copying Design

Tesla Optimus Robot

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the official unveiling of the Optimus 3 version will be pushed closer to the actual start of production.

The decision comes as Tesla identifies a growing trend of competitors performing detailed, frame-by-frame analyses of its robot prototypes to copy the company’s work. By delaying the reveal, Musk aims to maintain Tesla’s competitive edge until the new humanoid robot is ready for the assembly line.

Production Timeline and Model S/X Transition

The start of production for Optimus is currently estimated for the late July or August timeframe. To make room for the new robotics line, Tesla is ending production of the Model S and Model X in early May.

Musk described the transition as an “insanely fast” undertaking, involving several stages:

  • Dismantling: Work has already started on removing basic parts and upstream components like battery packs and motors.
  • Final Assembly: The main Model S and Model X assembly line will be dismantled next month.
  • Installation: A completely new production line must be installed, including new wiring, communication systems, and machine testing.

Ramp-Up Challenges and Initial Tasks

Despite the summer production target, Musk warned that the initial rollout will be “quite slow.” He noted that it is impossible to predict an exact production rate because Optimus is a brand-new product with over 10,000 unique parts.

“The ramp will move as fast as the least lucky, slowest, dumbest part in the entire ten thousand,” Musk said, emphasizing the complexity of the project.

When production begins, the first generation of Optimus robots will be deployed within Tesla’s own factories. They will initially focus on performing simple skills before the company begins building toward more complex capabilities.
