Tesla Prepares for European FSD Expansion as Supervised Driving Heads to EU Review
Tesla is moving closer to a broader European launch of Full Self-Driving (FSD), with the software currently approved in the Netherlands and a wider expansion expected this summer. During the Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk and Autopilot head Ashok Elluswamy detailed the regulatory and technical roadmap for the region.
Musk noted that the next major milestone is a formal review by the European Union. “I think the supervised FSD goes to Brussels for EU review in May,” Musk stated, though he cautioned that the company is “somewhat at the mercy of the regulators” regarding specific launch dates.
Regulatory Hurdles for Robotaxis
While fans are eager for autonomous services, Musk suggested that discussing a European Robotaxi strategy is “probably jumping the gun here.” He highlighted the slow pace of international approvals, noting that “it took us an immense amount of time just to get supervised self driving approved in Europe.”
While Tesla plans to aim for unsupervised driving and Robotaxis in the region eventually, Musk admitted, “I actually don’t know what the timeframe for that is.” He emphasized that while Tesla pushes as hard as possible, “it’s ultimately up to the governments in Europe and the EU to decide what to do.”
Global Software Architecture
From a technical perspective, Tesla is confident that the software used in North America will translate well to European roads. Ashok Elluswamy explained that the version deployed in the Netherlands uses “the same exact architecture and the training procedure” as the U.S. version, only with more “Europe data” included.
Elluswamy expects this trend to continue for future versions, stating that “whatever we used to solve in the US will work in other places in the rest of the world, too, provided we were able to add the data from the local regions.”
