Intel has officially partnered with SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla to launch Terafab, a massive initiative aimed at completely refactoring silicon fabrication technology.
The ambitious project seeks to close the gap between current chip production and the skyrocketing demand of the future. The goal is for Terafab to produce 1 TW/year of compute, providing the raw power needed for upcoming breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and robotics.
“Intel is joining Terafab!” SpaceX announced on Tuesday. The company described the venture as “the most epic chip-building effort ever,” noting that it will combine logic, memory, and advanced packaging “under one roof.”
Intel expressed pride in joining the project, noting that its ability to “design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale” will be a primary driver in accelerating these goals. The partnership follows a recent visit from Elon Musk to Intel’s facilities this past weekend.
According to the project’s vision, this leap in compute power is essential for a future that reaches “among the stars.” For those following the tech sector, this collaboration represents a significant shift as traditional silicon giants and Musk’s frontier companies merge their expertise. The goal is to get a factory on the moon to launch AI satellites right from the lunar surface, bypassing the need for rockets on Earth.
