Tesla Officially Kills Custom Orders for Model S and Model X

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has officially marked the “ending of an era” for the company, announcing that custom orders for the Model S and Model X have come to a permanent halt. In a late-night post on March 31, Musk confirmed that the company’s original flagship vehicles are being phased out to make room for a new chapter focused on autonomy and robotics.

“Custom orders of the Tesla Model S & X have come to an end. All that’s left are some in inventory,” Musk stated, adding that the company plans to hold an official ceremony to commemorate the legacy of the two vehicles. “I love those cars. This was me at production launch 14 years ago,” he wrote, sharing a nostalgic photo from the early days of the Fremont factory.

The move comes just months after Tesla first signaled during its Q4 2025 earnings call that the premium lines would be “put out to pasture” by the second quarter of 2026. While the Model 3 and Model Y have long since overtaken the S and X in sales volume, these two models were the foundation of Tesla’s global success.

The Model S first arrived in 2012, proving to the world that an electric sedan could outperform gas-powered luxury rivals. It was followed in 2015 by the Model X, famous for its complex Falcon-Wing doors and high-tech cabin. Together, they established Tesla as a serious automaker and paved the way for the mass-market success of the brand’s later models. Both were pioneers for EVs at the time.

The decision to end production isn’t just about declining sales; it is a strategic pivot for the Fremont factory. Tesla plans to repurpose the production lines previously used for the Model S and X to manufacture the Optimus humanoid robot. Musk has set ambitious goals for the robot, aiming for a production rate of up to one million units per year as the company shifts its primary focus toward an autonomous future.

For enthusiasts looking to own a piece of Tesla history, the only remaining option is to purchase from existing inventory. Time to pour one out for the Model S and Model X. What’s coming next from Tesla? Maybe a larger 3-row SUV and something cooler than a minivan?
