Tesla to Double Japan Service Network as Elon Musk Touts Strategic Shift
Tesla is planning a major expansion of its infrastructure in Japan, aiming to double its service centre network to support a growing customer base. The move, first reported by Nikkei, signals a renewed push by the U.S. automaker to capture more market share in a region traditionally dominated by domestic manufacturers.
The expansion focuses on improving after-sales support and increasing the density of the Supercharger network across the country. This infrastructure growth is essential for Tesla as it looks to convince more Japanese drivers to transition to electric vehicles.
Elon Musk acknowledged the strategic importance of the region while sharing the news, highlighting the deep industrial ties between his company and Japanese manufacturers.
“Tesla is making a big investment in Japan with service & Superchargers. Many of the parts in Teslas are made in Japan. Panasonic has been our biggest strategic supplier over the past 2 decades,” Musk stated.
The partnership with Panasonic remains a cornerstone of Tesla’s operations, as the Japanese company remains a primary provider of battery cells. Beyond the supply chain, Tesla has been aggressively installing V4 Superchargers in urban hubs like Tokyo and Osaka to provide faster charging speeds for the latest Model 3 and Model Y units.
While the Japanese EV market has been slower to adopt battery electric vehicles compared to Norway or China, the arrival of more service centres is expected to reduce long-distance travel concerns for local owners. Tesla’s strategy involves building a seamless ecosystem that mirrors its success in North America, ensuring that maintenance and high-speed charging are as accessible as traditional gas stations.
