Elon Musk Vows to Solve “Car Seat Contraception” With New Tesla Model

Elon Musk has signaled that Tesla will take on a surprising barrier to family growth by addressing the difficulty of fitting three car seats in a standard vehicle. The Tesla CEO responded to discussion on X by stating that the company “should solve this” issue after being presented with research suggesting that car seat laws are inadvertently acting as a form of birth control.

Musk has long been an advocate of increasing birth rates by telling everyone to have more babies.

The conversation began when entrepreneur Ryan Petersen suggested that a Tesla with three rows of seating—each with its own dedicated pair of doors—could spark a massive baby boom. This design would remove the logistical nightmare of parents having to climb over seats to reach children in the back of a vehicle.

The debate gained traction when an academic paper titled “Car Seats as Contraception” was shared by user Keller Cliffton. Published in the Journal of Law and Economics, the study argues that modern safety regulations have significantly raised the cost of having a third child because many regular-sized cars cannot physically fit three child safety seats across the back row.

According to the research, when women have two children at ages requiring mandated car seats, they have a lower annual probability of giving birth to a third child. The researchers estimate that these laws led to a permanent reduction of approximately 8,000 births in 2017 alone and a cumulative total of 145,000 fewer births since 1980.

Musk’s response has reignited long-standing rumors that Tesla is developing a dedicated family vehicle, such as a minivan or a larger, more accessible three-row SUV. While the Model X and Model Y currently offer seven-seat configurations, they are often criticized for having a tight fit for multiple large car seats and difficult access to the third row. And we know the Model X is no longer being made, and the larger Model Y L remains only available in Asia.

A new Tesla design featuring specialized doors for every row would mark a significant departure from traditional automotive layouts. By addressing the space constraints identified by economists, Tesla could directly tackle one of the hidden factors currently dragging on fertility rates. Plus give everyone what they have longed for–a true 7-seat electric SUV that’s actually a Tesla.
