Tesla Robotaxis Go Family-Friendly: Minimum Rider Age Drops to Just 8 Years Old
Tesla has updated its Rider Terms of Service and related policies, officially lowering the minimum age for passengers from 13 down to 8 years old when riding in a Robotaxi.
Under the new rules, all riders between the ages of 8 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an authorized adult for the entire duration of the trip. The change applies to both the dedicated Robotaxi service and the FSD (Supervised) Rideshare platform.
Tesla is requiring all users to review the updated Robotaxi Terms of Service, Rider Rules, and Privacy Notices to remain in compliance. By continuing to use the Tesla app, customers are automatically agreeing to these new age and supervision requirements.
This policy update comes as Tesla aggressively scales its ride-hailing ambitions in 2026. The Robotaxi network originally launched in June 2025 with a limited pilot in Austin, Texas. Since then, the service has logged nearly 700,000 paid miles and expanded its operations significantly.
Currently, the network operates in two primary modes. In Austin, Texas, the service is Ramping Unsupervised, meaning vehicles are beginning to operate fully driverless without a human safety monitor behind the wheel. In the Bay Area of California, rides are currently Supervised, requiring a human safety driver to remain in the vehicle due to local density and regulatory requirements.
Tesla recently confirmed plans to launch the Robotaxi service in seven additional U.S. cities during the first half of 2026, including Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas.
The company is also preparing for the production of the Cybercab, a purpose-built vehicle designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing without traditional steering wheels or pedals. By lowering the rider age, Tesla is positioning the network as a more viable transportation option for families, allowing younger children to join parents on autonomous commutes and errands across these new metropolitan hubs.
