Tesla Reveals New Modular Computer Design to Speed Up FSD upgrades

Tesla has published a new patent that could change how its vehicles handle hardware upgrades for Full Self-Driving (FSD). The patent, which was filed in 2024 and released today, March 26, 2026, describes a modular design for the car’s Media Control Unit (MCU) and FSD computer, as noted by Koby Pierce.

The new structure would allow Tesla to swap out computer components much faster than before. Currently, replacing a car’s computer is a labor-intensive process that requires disconnecting various cooling hoses and cables. This modular approach would let technicians replace specific parts without needing to disturb the entire cooling plate or the rest of the unit.

For Tesla owners, this could mean that future hardware upgrades become more practical and affordable. Instead of replacing the entire computer, Tesla could potentially swap only the module responsible for self-driving. This flexibility could be key as the company moves toward its next-generation hardware, often referred to as AI5.

The move also improves long-term serviceability. If certain high-intensity AI tasks wear out specific parts of the computer over time, Tesla could replace just the stressed module. This modular setup aligns with Elon Musk’s vision of scalable AI, where different vehicles could eventually be fitted with different tiers of onboard computing power depending on their needs.

Industry observers noted that the diagrams in the patent appear to feature a version of the current AI4 hardware, suggesting this modular shift could be implemented in the near future.

Many HW3 owners that bought FSD outright are still waiting for their chance to upgrade computers. Let’s hope these changes will make life better for HW3 owners, who are falling behind in the FSD race (hopefully FSD 14 lite comes on time).
