Elon Musk Takes Note of 3-Row Tesla With Separate Doors for All
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is hinting that a new vehicle for families is on the horizon. The exchange started when Musk responded to a discussion about family transport by stating that something way cooler than a minivan is coming.
The comment caught the attention of Flexport founder Ryan Petersen, who suggested a specific three-row design to help parents. Petersen noted that if Tesla makes a car with 3 rows of seats, each with its own pair of doors so nobody has to climb over anybody else to get to their seat, they will create a baby boom the likes of which we haven’t seen in 80 years. Musk appeared to take the suggestion of a six-door, three-row layout seriously, replying simply with “noted.”
This interaction follows years of speculation regarding a dedicated high-capacity passenger vehicle from Tesla. While the Model X and Model Y both offer seven-seat configurations, they utilize traditional door layouts or falcon wing doors that still require passengers to climb into the rear. The Model S and X are also being removed from Tesla’s car lineup.
A six-door design would represent a radical departure from current automotive engineering to prioritize easy access for large families. When is someone going to make an EV version of the Honda Odyssey?
Tesla is currently focused on the launch of its dedicated Cybercab and a more affordable next-generation platform. It remains unclear if this three-row alternative will be a variant of those upcoming models or an entirely new vehicle class aimed at unseating the popular gas family haulers currently sold by competitors.
