British Airways Becomes First UK Airline to Launch Free Starlink Wi-Fi
British Airways officially made history yesterday as the first UK carrier to launch high-speed, free Starlink Wi-Fi on a commercial flight. The inaugural connected journey took off on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for Houston, Texas, marking a major shift in how passengers stay connected at 38,000 feet.
The airline is moving away from slow, traditional satellite internet in favour of Elon Musk’s Starlink network, which uses more than 10,000 low-Earth orbit satellites. This technology allows for download speeds exceeding 500 Mbps, meaning travellers in every cabin—from Economy to First—can now stream movies, video call, and work with the same reliability they experience at home.
British Airways confirmed that the service will be entirely free for all customers from takeoff to touchdown. The rollout is currently focused on the 787-8 fleet, but the airline plans to equip its entire fleet of more than 300 aircraft with the technology within the next two years.
“We’re excited to be the first UK airline to bring this level of connectivity to our customers,” said Sean Doyle, British Airways Chairman and CEO. “Starlink will give our customers fast, reliable Wi-Fi that transforms the onboard experience. This milestone is part of a wider investment in elevating every aspect of our customer journey as we continue to modernise our airline.”
The upgrade isn’t just for passengers. The high-speed connection will also allow pilots and cabin crew to communicate with ground teams in real time, improving overall operational efficiency. This launch is a centerpiece of the airline’s broader £7 billion transformation plan, which includes new airport lounges and AI-driven technology to improve flight punctuality.
