Tesla celebrated a major milestone on March 14, marking seven years since the first unveiling of the Model Y. What began as a crossover project sharing most of its DNA with the Model 3 has since transformed the automotive landscape, officially becoming the world’s best-selling car of any kind just three years after its initial launch.

The vehicle’s rise to the top saw it surpass long-standing global leaders like the Toyota Corolla and RAV4. According to Tesla, the Model Y has now secured the title of the world’s best-selling car for the third consecutive year, a feat driven by continuous software updates and manufacturing expansions across its global Gigafactories.

“7 years ago today, we unveiled Model Y,” said Tesla on X on Saturday. “It became the world’s best-selling car of any kind just 3 years later.”

A History of Innovation: The Model Y Evolution

The Model Y has avoided traditional model years, instead opting for rolling hardware and software improvements. Here is how the vehicle has changed since its debut:

  • 2019–2020: The Arrival The Model Y officially launched in March 2020. Early versions introduced the energy-efficient heat pump, which replaced traditional resistive heating to preserve battery range in cold weather.

  • 2021: Expanding Utility Tesla added the highly requested seven-seat interior option and introduced the Standard Range RWD model. Hardware improvements included the addition of a HEPA filter (Bioweapon Defence Mode) and laminated double-pane glass for a quieter cabin.

  • 2022: The Vision Shift Tesla began removing ultrasonic sensors in favor of Tesla Vision, a camera-only Autopilot system. This year also saw the introduction of the more powerful Ryzen infotainment processor and a 12V lithium-ion accessory battery.

  • 2023: Comfort & Build Quality The company retuned the suspension for a comfort focus to address criticisms of a stiff ride. This was also the year the Model Y officially claimed the global sales crown.

  • 2025–2026: The “Juniper” Refresh The most significant overhaul, codenamed Juniper, brought a total redesign. Key features include front and rear LED light bars, a 25% quieter cabin with 360-degree acoustic glass, ventilated seats, and an 8-inch rear touchscreen for passengers.

Today, the US Model Y lineup has been simplified into three core configurations on the Tesla configurator, each featuring the “Juniper” refinements like the 16-inch high-resolution center display and a new 8-inch rear passenger screen.

The entry-level Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $39,990, offering 321 miles of range and a 6.8-second 0–60 mph time. There’s a Premium RWD at $44,990 US. The All-Wheel Drive is priced at $41,990, is the only trim currently offering the optional seven-seat interior for an additional $2,500 while providing a 4.6-second sprint and 327 miles of range. There’s also the Premium AWD at $48,990.

For those prioritizing speed, the Performance variant sits at $57,490, delivering a blistering 3.3-second 0–60 mph time and 306 miles of range.
