Tesla Terafab Alert: Elon Musk Confirms AI Chip Plant Starts in 7 Days
Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla’s ambitious Terafab project will officially launch in seven days. The project represents a massive shift in Tesla’s strategy, as the company moves to build its own semiconductors domestically to power its fleet of autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots.
The announcement follows months of speculation regarding Tesla’s North Campus expansion at Giga Texas. Observer Joe Tegtmeyer recently captured drone footage of massive construction site preparation just north of the existing factory. Tegtmeyer noted that the scale of this new development rivals the original footprint of the main Giga Texas building, signaling a project of unprecedented size.
What is the Terafab Project?
The Terafab is designed to be a gigantic chip fabrication facility that integrates logic, memory, and advanced packaging all under one roof. Musk has stated that this move toward vertical integration is necessary to secure Tesla’s AI supply chain against geopolitical risks and to meet the staggering demand for chips that existing suppliers like TSMC and Samsung cannot fulfill.
“We have to make our mistakes at a small scale and then make a big one,” Musk said during a recent podcast, referring to a “little fab” pilot project currently underway. He joked that the secret is already out, as “drones hovering over the bloody thing” are tracking construction in real-time (essentially referring to Tegtmeyer’s ongoing drone footage).
The Optimus Connection
The Terafab launch is closely tied to Tesla’s massive push into robotics. Construction at the North Campus is expected to house a dedicated production facility for the Optimus humanoid robot, with a staggering target of 10 million units per year.
By building its own high-performance AI chips (likely the upcoming AI5 and AI6 generations) at the Terafab, Tesla aims to reduce costs and gain full control over the brains of both its cars and its robots.
