How to Get Paid to Charge Your Tesla in Canada with WattsApp
Canadian Tesla owners can now officially sign up for the WattsApp charging rewards program following the successful completion of its beta testing phase. The Toronto-based platform, which transforms home charging sessions into financial rewards, has moved into full operation with a streamlined payout system that replaces older gift card options with direct cash.
The program works by linking a Tesla account to WattsApp using official APIs to track energy delivery from Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connectors. Users earn 3 points for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) added to their vehicle. Under the new post-beta rules, the company has lowered the minimum redemption threshold to 10,000 points (it was 25,000 before). All rewards are now issued exclusively as cash via Interac e-Transfer.
The timing for these payouts depends on the type of points earned. Referral points can be cashed out at any time once the 10,000-point floor is reached. However, points earned through daily charging are redeemable annually during the first quarter of the year. This specific schedule exists because charging data and the associated carbon credits must be verified by federal regulatory authorities before funds are released.
WattsApp functions as a bridge to Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), a federal framework designed to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels. Because individual homeowners cannot register their own charging data directly with the government to generate credits, WattsApp acts as the registered Charging Network Operator to manage the complex regulatory reporting on their behalf.
To join, residents must connect their compatible charger through the WattsApp portal. The system logs essential vehicle parameters like make and weight to ensure data integrity for federal compliance. While the program currently supports Tesla hardware, the company plans to expand compatibility to other internet-connected chargers in future rollouts.
