Tesla FSD Supervised: Owners Pass 8 Billion Miles in Major Safety Milestone

Tesla has reached a major new milestone for its autonomous driving software, announcing that customers have now driven more than 8.2 billion miles using Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised. According to the company’s latest safety report, over 3 billion of those miles were clocked specifically on city streets.

Tesla is using this massive data set to argue that its AI-powered system is significantly safer than a human driver alone. The company claims that when FSD is engaged under active supervision, the likelihood of being in a collision is drastically reduced. You can only purchase FSD with a subscription at $99 per month now.

Safety by the Numbers

Tesla says its vehicles are currently performing well above the U.S. national average, with new safety data highlighting the impact of its autonomous software. According to the company’s latest report, using FSD Supervised results in seven times fewer major and minor collisions compared to the national average. Additionally, the technology has led to a fivefold decrease in off-highway collisions, suggesting that the system’s real-time processing is significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents on the road.

The system works by processing over one million pixels of visual data every millisecond through eight external cameras. Tesla claims this 360-degree view allows the car to respond to complex environments in real time, potentially improving overall road safety by over 80%.

A Vision for the Future

Beyond just preventing fender benders, Tesla estimates that if FSD were used universally, it could potentially save over 32,000 lives and prevent 1.9 million injuries per year in the U.S. by eliminating common human errors like distracted driving, speeding, and impairment.

While the “Supervised” tag remains, drivers must stay alert and ready to take over at any moment. The 8-billion-mile mark shows just how quickly the fleet is expanding its real-world testing.

Yesterday, Tesla shared a picture of the first Cybercab off its assembly line, while Elon Musk confirmed a $30,000 sale will take place before 2027.
