Elon Musk Confirms $30,000 Cybercab Sales Set to Begin Before 2027
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has officially doubled down on his promise to bring a sub-$30,000 US Cybercab to the public before 2027.
The confirmation came during an exchange on X, where Musk was asked specifically if Tesla would sell the autonomous vehicle to customers for $30,000 US or less within that timeframe. Musk’s response was a definitive “Yes.”
The stakes for this timeline are unusually high in the tech community. Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, famously expressed skepticism following the “We, Robot” event in October 2024. Brownlee was so confident that Tesla couldn’t hit that price and date that he vowed to shave his head on camera if it actually happens.
In a separate reply to the account Whole Mars Catalog, Musk reiterated his confidence, simply stating “It’s gonna happen” regarding the bold targets.
What is the Cybercab?
The Cybercab is Tesla’s vision for a fully autonomous future. It is a sleek, two-seater vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on Tesla’s AI-powered Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The car also features butterfly-wing doors and lacks a traditional charging port, opting instead for inductive (wireless) charging. Musk envisions the Cybercab operating at a cost of roughly $0.20 per mile, potentially making it cheaper than public transit.
Latest Cybercab Recap
As of February 2026, the Cybercab program has moved from concept to reality. The very first validation unit officially rolled off the production line at Giga Texas earlier this week. While volume production is slated to begin in April 2026, Musk has cautioned that the initial ramp-up will be “agonizingly slow” due to the high number of new parts and the innovative “unboxed” manufacturing process.
Tesla has already expanded public road testing of the Cybercab to five U.S. states, including California and Texas. With the first units now rolling off the line, the countdown has officially begun—not just for the future of transport, but for MKBHD’s hair.
