Tesla Reveals FSD Subscriber Numbers for the First Time: 1.1 Million and Counting

For the first time in the company’s history, Tesla has pulled back the curtain on its software adoption rates, revealing exactly how many people are paying for Full Self-Driving (Supervised). According to the company’s Q4 2025 financial report released on Wednesday, the number of active FSD subscribers and owners hit 1.1 million by the end of last year.

The disclosure marks a major shift in transparency for Tesla, which has historically guarded its software “take rate” with secrecy. The data shows a steady, accelerating climb in adoption over the last five years, nearly doubling in total users since 2023. You can see the new entry on its Q4 earnings shareholder deck.

The Growth of the FSD Fleet

The new metrics show that Tesla ended 2021 with 400,000 active FSD users. That number grew to 500,000 in 2022 and 600,000 in 2023. The pace accelerated significantly in 2024, jumping to 800,000 users, before finally crossing the million-user milestone in 2025.

Industry analysts estimate that with 1.1 million active users, FSD is now generating roughly $1.3 billion in annual recurring revenue. This surge in adoption coincided with Tesla’s decision to slash the monthly subscription price to $99 and the release of version 12 and 13 software, which transitioned the system to an “end-to-end” neural network.

Why Tesla is Sharing Now

The sudden transparency isn’t just for shareholders; it’s tied directly to Elon Musk’s 2025 CEO Performance Award. The compensation package includes specific milestones for FSD adoption, requiring the company to reach 10 million active subscriptions over the next decade.

Despite the record high of 1.1 million, the data reveals a challenging road ahead. With nearly 9 million Tesla vehicles delivered globally to date, the current adoption rate sits at approximately 12% of the total fleet.

To drive these numbers higher, Tesla is moving toward a subscription-only model. Musk recently confirmed that the option to purchase FSD for a one-time fee of $8,000 US will be eliminated after February 14, 2026. This strategic pivot turns the vehicle into a software platform, ensuring a steady stream of revenue that Musk has previously called the “infinite money glitch.”

“The scale of the data we are now collecting is unlike anything else in the industry,” Musk said during the earnings call, referring to the billions of miles driven by FSD users. “It is the only way to solve for true, unsupervised autonomy at scale.”
