Tesla Rolls Out FSD Camera Alert with Surprise Free Service

Tesla has started rolling out a new camera visibility alert that can automatically detect when the forward-facing cameras are struggling to see through the windshield — and offer owners a free precision cleaning appointment right from the Tesla app.
According to a new report from Not a Tesla App, the prompt appears for owners running the latest Full Self-Driving (Supervised) update, v14.1.7, which is software version 2025.38.8.7. When the system senses reduced visibility, a Limited Visibility message pops up on the display and directs users to schedule a no-cost cleaning by going to Service > Outstanding Work > Windshield Camera Area Precision Cleaning. Once triggered, the task automatically shows up as an outstanding service item.
The visibility issue stems from a hazy film that can slowly form on the interior of the windshield and inside the forward camera housing. This haze is caused by off-gassing from plastics inside the cabin — something Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously acknowledged, noting the company wants to simplify the cleaning process for the camera glass in future vehicles. The residue can be especially problematic in direct sunlight, heavy rain, or when facing bright headlights, making it harder for Autopilot or FSD to correctly interpret the road ahead.
Tesla already maintains a detailed service guide for resolving the issue yourself — titled Clean Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning of Inboard Glass) — on its official service site. However, the procedure involves removing trim pieces and accessing the camera enclosure manually, which remains unintuitive for most owners.
Under normal circumstances, a precision camera cleaning costs between $60 and $85 USD, depending on the model. Now, if the vehicle detects the obstruction itself, Tesla will handle the precision cleaning for free, either at a Service Center or via a mobile Tesla Ranger for eligible owners.
Tesla also offers an optional monthly windshield protection subscription, covering windshield repairs and replacements, for owners who want additional coverage.
With Musk calling the camera-visibility issue a “major area of focus”, this proactive prompt — and free cleaning — should help improve FSD reliability as Tesla continues rolling out the company’s latest FSD 14 updates.
