Tesla has hit another major milestone at its largest factory outside the United States. The automaker announced that the 5 millionth battery pack has officially rolled off the production line at Gigafactory Shanghai, underscoring the massive scale and efficiency of its Chinese operations.

The news was shared by the official Tesla Asia account on X, which posted photos commemorating the event with the caption, “The 5 millionth battery pack from Giga Shanghai rolls off the line.” Tom Zhu, Tesla’s Senior Vice President of Automotive and Vice President for Greater China, also celebrated the achievement with a short but fitting post: “Power up, team!”

Giga Shanghai began operations in late 2019 and has since grown into one of the most productive automotive factories in the world. The facility produces both the Model 3 and Model Y for domestic sales and exports to dozens of global markets across Europe, Asia, and beyond. It’s also home to the manufacturing of several region-exclusive variants, including the six-seat Model Y L and the long-range Model Y+ and Model 3+, both capable of over 800 km of CLTC-rated range.

The 5-million-pack milestone follows a string of production records at the Shanghai facility. In July 2024, Tesla built its 10 millionth drive unit there, and by November of the same year, the factory had produced three million vehicles and exported one million of them overseas.

This achievement comes as Tesla’s sales in mainland China fell to a three-year low in October, even as exports soared to a two-year high — signaling shifting dynamics in the company’s regional strategy. Tesla confirmed last month that it’s ramping up production at Giga Shanghai heading into Q4 to meet growing international demand.

Giga Shanghai remains Tesla’s most important export hub, responsible for roughly half of the company’s global deliveries in 2024 alone. Its combination of high-volume production, localized supply chains, and rapid model adaptation continues to make it a cornerstone of Tesla’s manufacturing network.
