Amazon has officially rolled out its first electric delivery vans from Rivian in Canada, with 50 of the vehicles now operating in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia. The launch marks a key milestone in Amazon’s effort to cut emissions from its delivery network and move toward its 2040 net-zero carbon goal.

The electric vans are operating out of Amazon’s Delta, B.C. delivery station and are being used by two local Delivery Service Partners (DSPs). The Rivian-built vans feature 360-degree visibility, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control for safety, along with comfort-focused touches like ventilated seats and powered doors.

Amazon first partnered with California-based Rivian in 2019 to build a custom electric fleet as part of its Climate Pledge. The company aims to have 100,000 Rivian electric vans on the road globally by 2030. Rivian electric vans first debuted in the U.S. in the summer of 2022 and there over 25,000 on the road right now.

So far, Amazon has deployed over 35,000 electric vehicles worldwide, which have already delivered more than 1.5 billion packages. Back in 2019, Amazon invested $700 million into Rivian as part of an early funding round.

The new vans are part of a broader shift toward sustainable logistics as Amazon electrifies its global fleet to reduce its environmental impact.
