Lucid on Thursday announced a sweeping new partnership with rideshare giant Uber and autonomous technology developer Nuro to launch a premium global robotaxi network. Under the deal, Uber plans to deploy more than 20,000 autonomous Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro’s self-driving tech across dozens of markets worldwide over the next six years.

Expected to start with a major U.S. city sometime in 2026, the program will use Lucid’s Gravity SUV platform equipped with the Nuro Driver™, a Level 4 autonomous driving system, and be offered exclusively on the Uber platform. The robotaxis will be owned and operated either directly by Uber or through its fleet partners.

“Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “We’re thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.”

As part of the deal, Uber will make multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Lucid and Nuro. That cash infusion will help integrate Nuro’s AI-powered autonomy stack directly into Lucid’s Gravity SUVs, which were first made available for orders in November 2024.

“This investment from Uber further validates Lucid’s fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles, and our industry-leading range and spacious well-appointed interiors, as ideal for ridesharing,” said Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid. “This is the start of our path to extend our innovation and technology leadership into this multi-trillion-dollar market.”

The Lucid-Nuro-Uber team-up is Uber’s most ambitious robotaxi move yet, following its ongoing collaborations with Waymo on autonomous rides and Uber Eats deliveries in select U.S. cities. With 34 million daily rides across 70 countries, Uber’s network gives this new partnership global scale — and Lucid’s Gravity platform promises fewer charging stops with up to 450 miles of range.

Nuro will be responsible for safety validations, closed-course testing, and supervised on-road trials to ensure the robotaxis are road-ready. A prototype is already testing autonomously at Nuro’s proving grounds in Las Vegas.
