SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has officially surpassed 500,000 active customers in Canada, marking another major milestone for the company’s global connectivity ambitions.
“Starlink is now connecting over 500K customers across Canada,” the official SpaceX Starlink account announced on X on Monday. The post also included a short spotlight on Syola Ikkidluak, a dog sledder from Iqaluit, Canada’s northernmost city, who relies on Starlink to stay connected during extended hunting trips on remote Arctic ice.
“We are what we call Nunataligaarjuk, close to the little islands out in the sea ice. Starlink has changed our lives out on the land,” said Syola.
“Where we are from, we are so isolated and Starlink has helped us connect to our family back home when we’re out hunting for days at a time. I have seen and heard of people being stuck out on the land, and they brought Starlink and that was the only way they communicated—when they need help. I am very thankful for Starlink, it’s very easy to use. You just bring it out, and hook it up, and it works.”
This new subscriber count comes just about a year after Starlink hit 400,000 active Canadian users in July 2024. That means the service grew an impressive 25% year-over-year.
Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network has helped transform internet access across Canada, particularly in remote and northern communities that previously had little to no access to high-speed internet. The service has proven vital not only for day-to-day communications but also for emergency services, education, and business in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited or non-existent.
The reach of Starlink isn’t just limited to the ground. SpaceX’s satellite internet network is also playing a pivotal role in driving faster in-flight Wi-Fi worldwide, with Canada’s own WestJet partnering with Starlink to provide passengers with faster, more reliable internet at 30,000 feet.
With over 500,000 Canadians now connected, Starlink has cemented itself as a key player in the country’s digital landscape — and its growth doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
