Tesla Makes History with World’s First Autonomous Car Delivery

Tesla on Friday completed the world’s first fully autonomous vehicle delivery, with a Model Y driving itself from the company’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, to a customer’s home completely unassisted — no driver, no remote operator, and no human intervention at any point.

CEO Elon Musk shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the delivery was completed a day ahead of schedule. Earlier this month, Musk had said the company was aiming for its first autonomous delivery on June 28. Instead, it quietly happened a day early, marking a major milestone in Tesla’s push toward autonomy.

“There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!” Musk wrote on X. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”

The approximately 30-minute journey saw the Model Y navigate a range of environments — from parking lots and surface streets to high-speed highways — as it drove itself from the production line to the customer’s doorstep, completely hands-free.

The achievement highlights the growing capabilities of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system and the company’s custom in-house AI chip design, with Musk personally congratulating the team behind the software and hardware stack.

This milestone follows hot on the heels of Tesla’s Robotaxi pilot launch in Austin, further signaling that the company is accelerating its rollout of autonomous services. With regulatory approval still evolving, the company’s ability to execute fully driverless operations — even in limited pilots — represents a major leap forward for the future of transportation.
