Tesla Jumps Ahead of Schedule with First Self-Driving Car Delivery
Tesla has successfully tested its self-driving Model Y vehicles on public streets in Austin with no incidents, according to a statement from CEO Elon Musk on May 28, 2025.
The tests, conducted over several days with no one in the driver’s seat, mark a significant milestone in Tesla’s push toward fully autonomous vehicles. Musk also announced that the company is ahead of schedule and plans to deliver its first self-driving vehicle directly from the factory to a customer next month.
These developments align with Musk’s vision of a future where Tesla vehicles operate as a fleet of autonomous robotaxis, potentially transforming transportation. Bloomberg reported on a rumoured launch date of June 12 in Austin.
“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents. A month ahead of schedule,” said Musk. He concluded with, “Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer.”
Last night, Musk also confirmed his time working for the White House and DOGE is coming to an end. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” said Musk.
“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” he said. Shares of Tesla were up today on the news, but gains have pared down to 0.26% for the day.
Imagine the feeling of seeing your shiny new Model Y pulling into your driveway, after driving itself from the factory. The future is here, folks.
