Starship’s 9th Test Flight Date: May 27 with Reused Booster

Starship ninth test.

SpaceX is targeting Tuesday, May 27 for the ninth flight test of Starship, with liftoff expected as early as 6:30 p.m. CT. A live webcast will begin about 30 minutes before launch on SpaceX.com, X (@SpaceX), and the X TV app.

This flight marks a major milestone: the first reuse of a Super Heavy booster, which previously launched and returned during the seventh test. Most of the hardware remains intact, including 29 of 33 Raptor engines. Following a detailed inspection and hardware updates from lessons learned in Flight 8, SpaceX aims to boost reliability and reduce turnaround time between launches.

Starship will attempt several key objectives, including its first payload deployment, in-space engine relight, and reentry tests to improve landing performance. The vehicle will not return to the launch site but instead follow a path toward an offshore landing zone for safety while gathering critical flight data.

The booster will try a controlled flip and new high-angle descent technique to slow its return using atmospheric drag. These maneuvers are designed to test future flight profiles and improve fuel efficiency on future missions.

The upper stage will fly a suborbital path and attempt a landing following its reentry. SpaceX notes the schedule remains dynamic and subject to change.

Yesterday, SpaceX shared pictures of Starship and Super Heavy moved to the launch pad at Starbase ahead of the ninth flight test. Here’s to yet another exciting test again, stay tuned folks.
