Tesla App Code Hints Robotaxi Is Almost Ready—Codenamed ‘Alicorn’

A new iOS app update that came out this week for Tesla has revealed that the company’s long-awaited Robotaxi service is nearly complete, according to code found in version 4.44.5 of the Tesla app for iPhone.
Hidden inside the update are details that suggest Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing platform—internally called “Alicorn”—now includes a full set of features, from requesting rides to managing trips and emergencies, according to a breakdown by Tesla App Updates on X.
Code strings show that users will be able to enter destinations, adjust pickup points, track ETAs in real time, and even cancel rides with specific reasons like “car not moving” or “wait time too long.” There are also options to open the trunk, fasten your seatbelt, and give ride feedback—all indicating a fully fleshed-out experience. The system even includes emergency help request options and references to drivers being involved, likely during the early rollout for added safety or to let Tesla owners offer rides themselves.
One standout feature: Tesla appears to be prepping a Smart Summon upgrade that lets users start it with a single tap—no need to hold a button, just like in the latest FSD Beta v13. There’s also code pointing to new live activity features, which could show updates for charging, navigation, or trips on your phone lock screen.
The update also hints at some under-the-hood changes: integration with GRDB.swift, a tool that could help Tesla apps work faster and better offline, and two new Swift modules that seem tied to vehicle tracking and UI design.
No word yet on whether Robotaxi rides will require a Tesla account, but based on permission strings, it looks likely. That may mean Tesla will need to improve its account creation flow, which some say still feels clunky.
As for the development approach, Tesla is sticking with native app development, not cross-platform tools like React Native or Flutter. According to Tesla App Updates, this helps them build slicker features like Apple Watch integration and Live Activities support.
Tesla previously said its Robotaxi service will launch first in Austin, beginning in June. The service has already been in testing in two cities by Tesla employees.
