Tesla Launches Free FSD Trial in China
Tesla has launched a limited-time Full Self-Driving (FSD) trial in China, offering eligible drivers a chance to experience the advanced driver-assistance system for free. The trial runs from March 17 to April 16, 2025 (via @Tslachan).
Who’s Eligible?
The FSD trial is being rolled out in phases, so activation timing may vary. Owners can check if their vehicle is eligible through the “Software” page on their car’s touchscreen or by contacting Tesla’s online support via the Tesla app.
Currently, the trial is only available for select vehicles. Tesla noted that while they aim to push the feature to as many compatible cars as possible, some vehicles may not receive the update due to various factors.
Important Limitations and Warnings
Tesla’s FSD system is classified as Level 2 under China’s GB/T 40429-2021 standards, meaning it requires constant driver supervision. It is not fully autonomous and may be affected by real-world conditions like road environments and weather.
Drivers must always:
- Keep hands on the wheel and stay alert.
- Be ready to take control, especially in complex conditions like blind curves, intersections, and narrow roads.
- Understand that failure to intervene in time can result in accidents, misreading traffic signals, or other risks.
Tesla emphasized that drivers should thoroughly review the vehicle manual and watch the official FSD tutorial video before using the feature. If drivers are not confident in using the system, it’s advised to avoid activating it.
The FSD feature remains a Level 2 system. Any traffic violations, accidents, or penalties incurred during use are the driver’s responsibility. Tesla encourages participants to provide feedback but strictly prohibits misuse of the feature during the trial.
This trial is Tesla’s effort to allow customers to experience its latest autonomous driving technology in good faith.
We’ve seen some really impressive videos of FSD being able to navigate single lane roads in China, as customers are putting the system to the test big time. This video in particular showing how FSD was able to navigate out of dirt lot to find the exist was especially impressive.

I think each live stream feels like a marketing move.
He believes a 500 RMB monthly fee would be acceptable for many in China.#FSDChina pic.twitter.com/fjWV101YXD
