Tesla Unveils New Brake System in Model Y: What’s Changed

Tesla has unveiled a redesigned brake system in the new Model Y, designed to improve efficiency, stability, and the overall driving experience.

A key change is that the brake pedal no longer moves when Autopilot is engaged, thanks to a dual master cylinder system. One cylinder is controlled by the car when in Autopilot, while the other remains under driver control, improving braking precision and energy efficiency.

Integrated Braking and Deceleration System

Tesla has completely integrated the brake and accelerator pedals within the vehicle’s firmware. This means deceleration, braking, and traction control now work together more efficiently, optimizing performance and ensuring shorter stopping distances, better stability, and a smoother braking feel. The system constantly adapts to driving conditions, providing more consistent braking response across different scenarios.

One-Pedal Driving Enhancements

For drivers new to one-pedal driving, Tesla has introduced a Reduced Deceleration Mode, which allows the vehicle to slow down more gradually when the driver lifts off the accelerator. However, regenerative braking remains fully effective, with additional regen energy captured through the brake pedal. This ensures that energy efficiency is maximized, whether the car is slowing down through regenerative braking or direct braking.

How to Adjust Regenerative Braking for Deceleration

Tesla also gives drivers the ability to customize how the vehicle slows down through the touchscreen settings in the new Model Y:

  • Go to: Controls > Dynamics > Deceleration Mode.
  • Choose from two levels:
    • Reduced: Limits regenerative braking, allowing Model Y to coast farther after the accelerator is released.
    • Standard: Provides maximum regenerative braking, slowing the car down quickly when the accelerator is released, reducing the need for brake pedal use.

The combination of improved brake response, seamless system integration, and customizable deceleration settings makes the new Model Y’s brake system more intuitive, stable, and efficient than ever before. Check out the video below:
