Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory Set to Begin Production Next Week: Report
Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is officially set to start production on February 11, 2025, following months of trial runs, according to local outlet Shanghai Securities News, reports CnEVPost.
The facility, which focuses on producing Megapacks—Tesla’s massive commercial energy storage batteries—was completed in just seven months, breaking previous construction speed records.
Located in Shanghai’s Lingang district, the Megafactory is Tesla’s first energy storage plant outside the U.S. and will supply Megapacks to global markets. The factory aims to produce 10,000 Megapacks per year, capable of storing up to 40 GWh of energy—enough to power 50,000 homes in Shanghai for a year.
The first customer for Tesla’s Shanghai-made Megapacks is Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, which signed its initial order at the factory’s groundbreaking ceremony in May 2024.
Tesla’s Megapacks are designed to stabilize power grids and prevent blackouts by storing renewable energy and supplying it when needed. Each unit can hold over 3 MWh of energy, which could power 3,600 homes for an hour.
The factory’s battery supplier is CATL, China’s largest battery manufacturer, with BYD’s FinDreams Battery as an alternative supplier.
Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is set to play a key role in the company’s energy storage business worldwide, and now particularly in China.
